Moncada, Tarlac is one of the major producers of sweet potato in Central Luzon. They grow the crop once a year for a period of 3 months. Happens specifically at the tail end of the rainy season because sweet potato hates being soaked in wet soil. Just enough rain is necessary which will give not too much soil moisture and not too low moisture. GSMI farming team went and explore the business and started a 30 hectare plantation which started on December 2009 with the assistance of Engr. Cesar Tabago of Brgy. Sapang, Moncada, Tarlac. You maybe asking why an engineer is planting "KAMOTE?" Well there is good money in "KAMOTE" as explained to us by Engr. Tabago, people who goes to the gym or those we call pro good health take "KAMOTE" rather than rice because it is fibrous, rich in nutrients and low in carbohydrates. Even Coco Martin would agree to that! Some even uses KAMOTE as alternative for Potato in making french fries!
The market for Sweet Potato is huge, even our neighboring countries are eyeing for potential supply of this lowly plant which is a good source of minerals and very nutricous food.
